Do this

  1. Get down to their eye level. Every time. It's the difference between a snapshot and a portrait.
  2. Let the camera find the eye and follow it. Half-press early, shoot short bursts.
  3. Running around: mode dial to Tv, 1/500. Same everything else.
  4. Window light, side-on. Turn the room lights off if you can; mixed light goes orange.
