The light behind you at sunset

The sun sets over land here, so turn around. The last twenty minutes of light on the buildings and beach is the best light of the day for everything that isn't the sea.

Do this

  1. Face away from the sun. Everything it touches is warm and softly lit — buildings, faces, the wet sand.
  2. Look for long shadows and things that glow: a wet rock, a person's hair, the lighthouse itself.
  3. Move fast — you have twenty minutes. Don't fiddle with settings; Av f/5.6, shoot.
