Do this

  1. Batteries: the cold halves them. Spares in an inside pocket, against your body. Swap a 'dead' battery for a warm one and the dead one recovers.
  2. Coming indoors: seal the camera in a ziplock bag first, or leave it in the closed bag for half an hour. Otherwise it fogs inside and out.
  3. Gloves: the touchscreen won't work. Use the viewfinder, the dial and the cross keys — everything in the lessons works without touching the screen.
  4. The 100-400 mostly stays home. Sea eagles at Falsterbo and deer at dusk are the exceptions.

If it goes wrong

Camera won't turn on in the cold
Battery. Warm one in, cold one in your pocket.
